Book Reviews

Recipes for Play by Rachel Sumner and Ruth Mitchener

We found this delightful book in our local library and I was inspired to create from it within hours so wanted to share.  It is a new NZ book with lots of ideas for easy, simple, natural and cost-effective play both inside and outside.  It has recipes for creating natural food colouring along with ideas to keep your little ones, and not so little one, occupied while you are out and about.  So worth a journey to your local library or bookshop to investigate.  The pictures and words inspire you to begin making, creating and having fun straight away.

Pancakes Pancakes by Eric Carle

Daniel just loved this book and so wanted to help me with the book review this week.  I love Eric Carle's illustrations and his books always draw me in.  This one is a great one for looking at where we get the food we eat.  Jack wants pancakes but first he needs to help get the ingredients starting with cutting the wheat.  I know you'll love this as much as we do!

My Favourite Nursery Rhymes illustrated by Gaby Hanson

After a few weeks of watching Jasmine asked to do her own book review for one of her favourite books especially as it is available at the local library too.  It took a few takes to get this by which time we figured we'd leave further improvements for future videos ;)

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers

First adult book review - Yay!! one just for us grown-ups.  I read and found this book when I was going through a really rough time and it was amazing.  It transformed my thinking and as a consequence changed my life completely and started my road to healing.  I'm just reading it for a second time, or is it the third?,  while I struggle through a few fears.  I highly, highly, HIGHLY - do you get the point ;) -  recommend it even if you think your life is sweet and sorted.

Sorry about the funny face to start with - slowly learning about all this video stuff but not quite how to get a good start shot yet ;)

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback

This is a beautifully illustrated book which reminds us that we don't always need to replace with new.

Here is a link to a video someone has created with illustrations from the book and the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ37_s7X3jA  and another to an interview with Simms Taback about how he created another of his books. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46qGQ2eh9BQ

Remember that November by Jennifer Beck and Lindsay Fisher

I love this book for so many reasons - New Zealand author, beautiful illustrations, links to New Zealand history, shows links between significant dates in different cultures and shows us there is always a choice in life.  Jennifer Beck is such a wonderful story teller who is able to weave a good story with facts.  You will be seeing more of her books on here that is for sure! :)
