Merry Christmas Eve Everyone

Thought that Christmas Eve would be as good a time as any to write our final update for the year!  We had planned to be off tramping (hiking) tomorrow after a big Christmas breakfast however the plans have changed as the rain has begun to pour down. Now it will be a leisurely day at home, after having made a quick banana cake which the kids decorated Christmas style and a pavlova for dessert.  The tramping can wait until next week over New Years.

Our quickly made Christmas Cake as decorated by themselves.

Liam is still threatening to cancel Christmas - nothing much changes there ;)  This year however the kids, with an additional year of wisdom behind them, have told him that he will need to stay in his room with just water and a book if he is cancelling it and they will open his presents!!  Still not sure who was more serious or excited.

December has seen us travelling quite a bit.  To start the month off we enjoyed our first un-schoolers camp over the hill in Staveley.  It was great to be with other families that although on a different journey still had much in common with us.  The kids loved running around with all the others, climbing trees and going on bush walks.  Only stayed the one night however it was enough for us to know that we would be back again to mix, talk and share with like-minded families.  Think it was great too that Dads were there as often it is the Mama's always getting together and giving information out second-hand ;)

Daniel up yet another tree!  He wanted to climb every one that he could on camp.

After this we headed over to Christchurch for an unveiling of a Kiwirail statue.  It is the 150 year anniversary so a special installation statue was created for all to see at Ferrymead.  Great to get free entry for the event and then get to look around, ride on the trains, sample sherbet and play olden day games.  I hadn't been there for years and years so really lovely to revisit some memories.  Then the following weekend proved to be our only at home for the whole month!  The kids and Liam got out into the garden to check over everything that is growing.  It has been great getting all our own salad bits along with peas and the odd early strawberry.  Still waiting for the tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers and beetroot to mature so we can continue our feasting.

Seeing what is coming up in our new front garden veggie beds.

The middle of the month saw us back in Christchurch for a send off to Branston Intermediate (the school I used to teach at which is a casualty of the Christchurch School closures).  It was great to have a night out with friends, even made it past mid-night, and the kids loved being with Nan without parents to turn off the T.V.  You can tell I don't go out much these days though as by Sunday night I was in bed by 7pm!!  Before both kids were even asleep.  Further in our travel feast of December - last weekend we were up in Westport to catch up with friends and family.  The kids were in heaven going out to so many cafes in one weekend and of course getting to watch T.V. again in our holiday accommodation.  Great to be able to go away with the dog too and we (the dog and I that is) had a good long run around the lighthouse track which was my extra treat in a month of holidays!!

During our weeks at home Jasmine has been busy at Art Club creating and making.  She enjoyed all the art however she tells me that she can't wait to get back to Pippins because they have lots of different cool things ;)  Next year she will be stepping up to Brownies which she is looking forward to although I'm not sure if she realises that it will be more work than at Pippins - oh well ignorance it bliss at times ;)

Liam has been giving the kids lots of Star Wars stories for bedtime lately and it has inspired a whole heap of stories, drawings, Lego play and craft!  The best activity to come out of all the story telling would have to be when the kids made their own C3PO and R2D2 after Liam showed them a YouTube clip of both the robots.  It was amazing to see them go ahead and make what they had visualised in their minds and just make it without any assistance - well apart from handing them cello tape that is ;)

The robot friends.  Herself even managed to create R2D2's wheels with bottle caps!

It certainly has been a busy month for us and yet more adventures to come.  Been so great spending every weekend together having fun and being out and about, think that January may have to be our rest month before we head up North for a holiday in Feb.

Hope this finds you all warm, merry and ready for a relaxing Christmas and New Year.

For all you Business Women out there

Just  a few months ago I was wading through procrastination over tasks I had begun, feeling sorry for myself, struggling to know which way my business was going and if I even had a business.  I had dreams of helping people in a natural, holistic way and yet I just couldn't seem to get everything lined up to actually make it happen and make money at the same time.  I began to search the internet for inspiration, trying to see if I was 'doing the right thing' or if I should completely change what I was doing.

While searching I found a women in Australia, Leonie Dawson, who caught my eye.  What she had to say was pretty amazing and inspiring.  I was intrigued by what she had to say so I had a good look at her site, I looked at the products and then wasn't sure.  I told myself it wasn't really for me.  I wasn't an artist like her so definitely not for me and left it at that. Her site did stick with me though and I looked again a month later then still procrastinated over the whole idea, after all I probably won't find it that useful for the money spent so why take the risk?

Within another month however a dear friend, who had a friend who was using Leonie's products,  told me all about this amazing women Leonie Dawson and her FABULOUS Academy (This and others are Affiliate Links where if you buy through my link then I get to a wee reward from Leonie) who had a year long membership which allowed you to access all her goodies (now this one is completely FREE so go over an check her out.  Go on!! I'll wait right here till you click and look at the new tab full of Leonie's FREE Goodies.  Did I say they were FREE!!!! )  along with amazing courses on business and a network of other like-minded women in business.

It was the hearing if from someone that was actually in the The Amazing Life and Biz Academy (Affiliate Link) themselves that made all the difference for me so I thought I would let you all know about it on here.  That way you can hear first hand how GREAT it really is and you won't miss out on any of the fantastic, empowering and transforming products she has.  You'll be able to get into it without wasting time like I did ;)  I feel that any money I spent on joining this Biz Academy was so worth it and the money has been repaid with all the knowledge, know how, inspiration and support I'm getting.  Now most of you know me and I don't rave about things unless they really are GOOD!!  and this is GREAT ;)

The membership is for a whole year of goodies, resources, community, business connections, freebies (Affiliate Link)  and INSPIRATION GALORE.  It has had me excited and ready to move forward in my business ever since I signed up.  It amazes me how much my confidence has grown in this short time and I am finally starting to achieve all those dreams I have.  Her courses are easy and fun to read while being packed with inspiration and information on how to move ahead with your business.  It is all from her experience of creating a 3/4 million dollar business and it filled with lots of links, videos and support along the way.

I downloaded her freebie  Biz & Blog Star Workshop   (You know these are all Affiliate links now - right? however this one is free if you sign up to her e-zine.  It is a great wee book with loads of tips for online marketing to move you ahead) which I read and re-read.  With a bit of confidence gained through trying out suggestions from the Biz & Blog Star Workshop   (Affiliate Link)  I began with the Business Goddess E-Course (Affiliate Link) which connected me with loads of lovely ladies all working at growing their businesses and within the Business Goddess (Affiliate Link) course is also a Magic Money making kit freebie which helps you to outline your goals concerning wealth and how to go about getting it.

Leonie's  'Create Your Amazing Year Biz edition Workbook' (Affiliate Link again ;)) is a real jewel in the crown for me though as it helped outline where my business was and where I wanted it to be.  This is something I had been avoiding as I was a bit scared to face the hard, cold facts.  Actually though once I did the  'Create Your Amazing Year Biz edition Workbook' (Affiliate Link)  I realised that it was half as bad as I thought and inspired my to get my 'A into G'.  The transformation has been wonderful and I finally feel like I am moving forward with my business.

I have loved every part of  The Amazing Life and Biz Academy (Affiliate Link) and benefitted immensely through Leonie's inspirational and up-lifting business advice.  It is like having a mentor at your side 24/7 and literally at your fingertips.  I really feel that I have got my money back and more in the 2 months I've been a member.  Every time I have a worry, question or concern I can connect with thousands of like minded business women online and receive help.  Now what could be better than that!!  Go on give it a go ;)

Wow.... has it really been that long?

I can't believe that it has been almost 7 weeks since I have posted about us on here.  I have done the biz stuff that is true just not our flexi-learning journey update.  So much to tell ...... so little space to do it in!  Long line of photos to follow ;)

Since Oct we have been white-baiting, playing on the beach, on holiday in Picton, catching up with friends and family, fishing, making crafts, down the park, riding bikes, celebrating International pirate day, Jasmine became 'Reading Star of the Month' at the local library, celebrating Jack o Lantern night, going to Art Club, selling crafts, making booklets on just about everything, exploring the West Coast, celebrating Diwali, getting ready to celebrate Hanukkah and dressing up as Smurfs. Phew!!!
The kids checking out our biggest whitebait haul and the last.

Us on a walk at Karaka Point while on holiday in Picton

The kids with their costumes ready for Halloween story-time at the library.

The Jack o Lanterns.  We tend to focus on this as it is an Irish tradition.

Us on a walk in Nelson's Creek, West Coast

Drawing Diwali pictures for Lakshmi to come bring us wealth - still have our fingers crossed for that one!

The 'Reading Star of the Month'

Trying to sell our wares before we were rained off due to unusual West Coast weather ;)

Jasmine and Himself at 'Take a kid Fishing' down at Hokitika River.  Daniel is waiting in the rocks for his turn.

Papa Smurf as face-painted by his sister!  The kids have become fascinated with my old Smurfs, some vending machine ones they got in Oz & stories Himself is telling them from a miss-spent youth watching T.V.
Liam is still loving his job, the kids are loving their freedom and I am still loving our flexi-learning journey and so glad to have this time with the kids.  Some days are just down right MENTAL though most are filled with laugher, fun and learning so that makes up for the others and convinces me we are still on the right garden path.

Hope this finds you all happy, healthy and content

TNT - The Necessary Three

Recently I heard a talk by a woman (Star Munroe) saying that her life transforming action, and the thing she got all of her clients to do was something called the Magic 3. This tool, in her own words, had moved her from destructive to dazzling.

I have encountered this tool before, and you may have too, only under a different name such as Most Important Three or Most Important Tasks (MIT) and I'm sure there are loads more names for this self-help technique.  In fact I've even made up my own The Necessary Three (TNT) TNT because this tool is dynamite when used. ;)  Essentially though you make a list of 3 things that are small and achievable which you commit to completing every day. The two key ingredients are achievable tasks and commitment to do them everyday.

The funny thing is that back in June I made a decision, after feeling that I was just floating through life at the whim of any passing breeze, that I would make sure I did at least 3 things each day; exercise for at least 10 minutes, tap on negative emotions or limiting beliefs and write positive things about the day in a diary.  At the same time I made three priorities for Home-educating our kids as I was feeling that things weren't flowing as well as they were.  Each week day I would read, write and do some maths with them; everything else was a bonus.  I hadn't even put the two together - the decision and the tool.

I made the commitment and moved from day to day.  Some days it was easy to do all 3 things for both me and home-education while others days it was a struggle to do even one.  On my struggle days I did give myself and the kids a break by choosing to only focus on my 3 however before long I'd realise I missed having that structure and would soon be back on the wagon to do my 3 and the home-educating 3.  I didn't always have control of the reins but they were in hand at least and we were going in the right direction.

I could feel the rhythm of up and down days however it wasn't until I heard about the Magic 3 that my epiphany happened. The days when I felt good and things flowed more positively were actually the days I did my 3 tasks and the 3 for home-educating.  By completing those 6 little things (each of which was no more than 20 minutes - except for reading which the kids would have me do all day if they could!) I had a huge feeling of achievement that set me up to actually want to do more. Even if I didn't do more I still felt really good because I had completed my tasks for the day.

TNT (The Necessary Three) is such a simple method, so effective for transformation and best of all completely FREE ;). It only takes 21 days to form a habit so beyond that the commitment part is just a daily task like brushing your teeth or checking the mail. The tasks themselves can be whatever you want as long as they are easily achievable each day and you commit to achieving them.  It could be waking by a certain time, meditating, exercising for a set time, having breakfast, tapping, drinking a set amount of water, going to bed at a certain time .......... and the list goes on.

By making the 3 tasks small to start with they will be easier to commit to and therefore easier to achieve.  When you achieve them each day you will then have a renewed belief in yourself and positive feelings will flow. You can always change the 3 tasks or add to them later when you are ready.  The focus is about taking action, action which will make you feel good, action which will move you towards your goals and action which will move you to Becoming Healthy.

It's Show Time!!

I know, I know, I know!!!  You only just got finished reading my huge post on Bach Flowers the other day and then I go and bombard you with another update ;)

Well the reason being that I had such a great few days creating and helping themselves make their very first movies.  We found a fantastic book in The Warehouse for under $10 on how to create animated movies along with the software needed to complete it.  It is for years 8 plus so I really did get it for future interests however once I showed them a little they just wanted to hear more and more!

There was modelling clay with the book and as I was not that keen on letting them rip into the clay just yet they asked if they could make a movies with Lego.  Sure - why not?!  After all Lego is the main activity in this house from dawn till dusk at the moment ;)

So first to the story-boarding.  We checked in the book to see what one would look like then had a bit of a debate about weather Friends and Lego City were allowed to be in the same movie.  After some length of time and heat it appears they can't be ;)  So two storyboards it is and one camera ready for action.  I was really pleased with how well the storyboarding went as usually when the kids, well Jasmine actually, tell stories it ends up being a mini soap opera! On this occasion they both came up with quite concise ideas and parts of the story - Yay!

Trying out the set for size
Jasmine got to make hers first as Daniel wanted to see how it was done - or maybe how it is not done ;)  We put all the figures into position and diligently moved each slightly as Jasmine took photos in between moves.  She had it all under control so I wasn't allowed to look and after a lot of fiddling and 83 photos later we were done!

Kate getting her tools to fix the jet ski
Talk about laugh when we first saw it!!!!  I have managed to work out how to slow it down now and later we will have a go at adding sound which will be yet another eye-opening learning experience for us all.  After seeing Jasmine's we decided to make 'sets' for subsequent movies and so we were all prepared for Daniel's 'Grumpy Fireman goes to work' movie to be made.  Daniel decided he would move the figures and I could take the photos - not sure this made any improvements though ;)

Making the movie sets
I just had to share as so elated about all the learning, creating, sharing and connecting we have done ;)  Plus I thought you might like a good laugh to see you into the weekend!  Learnt heaps about converting files and all sorts so, as mentioned, no sound as yet as wanted to leave that learning curve for the next movies I think ;)  Look out for the Grumpy Fireman's Rolly Poley and one of the Friends pretending to be a dog!

Using Bach Flower Remedies

Many people have heard of Rescue Remedy however some are unaware of the other remedies within this system. Bach designed these to be used by all however he did intend them to be used in a particular way. When used as Bach intended the flower remedies are an incredibly powerful and safe tool to aid healing and help in personal development.
Around the turn of the centaury Edward Bach was a physician working in a London hospital when he noticed that even though patients had the same diseases they were suffering very differently.  On talking with them more he realised that at the heart of each person’s problem was an emotional issue. “Thus, behind all disease lie our fears, our anxieties, our greed, our likes and dislikes. Let us seek these out and heal them, and with the healing of them will go the disease from which we suffer.” E Bach (The 12 Healers and other remedies).

Although physical conditions can be linked to emotions, and this is exactly where Edward Bach first began his investigations, Bach Flower Remedies are purely for emotional states and should always be selected as such.   Many of us have had a headache however there are few who suffer with it exactly the same, as Bach discovered, and for this reason the focus should be on how the person is experiencing the headache emotionally when using Bach Flower Remedies.  “Take no notice of the disease, think only of the outlook on life of the one in distress. E Bach (The 12 Healers and other remedies).  Also in focusing on the individual and their emotions, changes can often be detected long before physical symptoms’, illness or disease occurs.  How often have you noticed that you are reacting differently or not feeling quite right only to have some physical manifestation occur after?  This is the difference that Bach Flower Remedies have – they look at the changing person, moods, reactions and emotions to maintain balance and with it good health.

It is hard not to focus on the physical as after all it is the most obvious. Likewise it can be hard not to link the emotional to the physical when there are many out there showing how affirmations and meditations can help heal us physically.  Essentially they are using the power of the mind to heal which is a valid and important skill to use.  Louise Hay has done some amazing work on Meta-physical conditions and she provides affirmations to help clear negative thoughts and limiting beliefs to help improve physical conditions.  These affirmations can work very well along side Bach Flower Remedies, as any therapy does, and can be useful as a guide to direct questioning about the root issue i.e. If someone has a headache which Louise Hay says is invalidating the self, self criticism and fear; you may ask if there is anything the person is worried or anxious about.  The primary focus with Bach Flower Remedies however should always be on how the person is feeling regardless of physical conditions. The healing energies of the remedies will then support all other work, therapy or treatment.

Bach designed his remedies to be able to be used by all – layperson and professional alike.  It is its simplicity, combined with its all-healing effects, that is so wonderful. No science, no knowledge is necessary, apart from the simple methods described.” E Bach (The 12 Healers and other remedies).  This may make you wonder why anyone would train in this system of healing or why you would pay for it.  The answer is objectivity of another listening, observing and sensing what we often shut down or ignore.

Bach began by testing on himself.  He found an initial 12 healers that he deemed so important that he released a booklet about them before the other remedies had been found.  These first 12 were Rock Rose, Mimulus, Cerato, Scleranthus, Gentian, Clematis, Water Violet, Impatiens, Agrimony, Centaury, Chicory and Vervain.  The fact that these are the first may also give an indication on how Bach himself was feeling as he found himself on the brink of discovery and finding a new healing system.

Each remedy has its own qualities and healing energies and while there are many that seem similar, i.e. Mimulus and Aspen for fear, with a little investigation into the issues and feelings below the surface the correct remedy with become apparent.  An example of this would be someone with a fear of dogs. The initial emotion is fear however the question which will always get to the bottom of thinks is “why?”  Are they scared due to the size of the dogs or is it the noise they make?  If so this would indicate Mimulus which is for fear of the known (what is there and apparent at the time).  If the fear is because they fear that the dog may bite them, may chase them or may jump up; then Aspen would be more appropriate as this is for fear of the unknown (what may happen or what they imagine is going on).  This is where a Bach Flower Remedy practitioner can be helpful just as a watchful and mindful observer may be.

Most people know and have used Rescue Remedy which is a combination of 5 (as in the liquid) or 6 remedies (as in the cream).  This is the only pre-prepared treatment bottle Bach accepts and it is particularly useful in extremely stressful, highly demanding or very emotional situations.  It is not however intended as a long term treatment or solution.  Rescue Remedy helps in the immediate ‘crisis’; when there is not the time, or often the inclination due to the situation, to find the remedies needed for long term healing.  Just as first aiders put a dressing over a wound till the hospital can assess it so should we use Rescue Remedy.

At times we could easily go through and select most if not all 38 remedies!  This may seem like a good cover all approach, however with Bach Flower Remedies (and many other holistic healing systems) less is more.  For this reason no more than 7 remedies should be selected at any one time.

To help with selection and understanding of remedies Bach put them into 7 different categories; Uncertainty, Oversensitivity, Fear, Over care for others welfare, Loneliness, Insufficient Interest in the Present Circumstances and Despondency and Despair.  Each of the 38 remedies fit into one of these categories, see below with Rescue Remedy being separate.

Uncertainty: Cerato, Scleranthus, Gentian, Gorse, Hornbeam, Wild Oat.

Over-sensitivity to influences and ideas: Agrimony, Centaury, Walnut, Holly.

Fear: Rock Rose, Mimulus, Cherry Plum, Aspen, Red Chestnut

Over-care for welfare of others: Chicory, Vervain, Vine, Beech, Rock Water.

Loneliness: Water Violet, Impatiens, Heather.

Insufficient interest in present circumstances: Clematis, Honeysuckle, Wild Rose, Olive, White Chestnut, Mustard, Chestnut Bud.

Despondency or despair: Larch, Pine, Elm, Sweet Chestnut, Star of Bethlehem, Willow, Oak, Crab Apple.

Once the remedies have been selected 2 drops from each stock bottle is added to 30 mls of spring water to create a ‘treatment bottle’.  From this treatment bottle at least 16 drops are taken each day, more if needed. These drops can be spaced out throughout the day or split so that half are taken upon rising in the morning and half when retiring for the evening.  The great thing about these drops is that they can also be added to any food which often is the easiest way for those not able to carry a treatment bottle around with them all day.

Some have likened the process of healing with Bach Flower Remedies to peeling an onion where the releasing of surface emotions only uncovers another layer and yet another.  It is through continuing to acknowledge and recognize these changing emotions that healing and clearing really occur.  Bach Flower Remedies have no known side effects so there is only benefit from continuing with remedies until emotions issues have be dealt with and cleared.  If a remedy is not the right one for you then it simply will no longer have an effect.  The time has come to select a new treatment bottle.

Bach Flower Remedies have been around for decades now yet their potential in healing and well-being is still only just being discovered.  Have you tried them and enjoyed their benefits?  I’m happy that you have such a great tool.  If not maybe now is the right time for you!

For even more information about Edward Bach and his remedies go to http://www.becominghealthy.co.nz/Products.html where you can find free downloads of his work.

Upcoming EFT Training

Join Us

In unlocking your potential through EFT

Jenny Johnston, an EFT Universe Trainer, warmly invites you to join her in Christchurch (March/April 2014) on a 4 day Intensive EFT Level 1 & 2 Live Workshop.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasiveness of needles. Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians while you think about your specific problem (whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc).

There are 5 areas of life that are challenging for people, over and over again. Those areas are: Love, Money, Health, Work, and Spirituality.  EFT can help in all of these areas as it works to clear energy blocks and limiting beliefs which are holding us back in life. Learn how to release stuck parts of your life and learn how to add EFT to your existing set of tools in your professional and personal practise.

Highlights of the last month ...

Well hello again ;)  It has been a busy old month and while our days seem to just tick along whenever I look at photos to put on here it always amazes me all the things the kids have been up to.  In the moment sometimes things feel rushed, frantic and sometimes just out right mental!! Looking back at the photos though the moments seem calm and they remind me of all the lovely aspects. They seem so serene and happy, a fragment of time caught on film.

So I thought this month I would choose 4 highlights for us and offer our lovely photos;

Monsters Birthday - 29th August 2013
Daniel decided that his beloved Monster needed an official birthday. Once again Daniel knew exactly the 'recipe' needed (thankfully minus any cheese) and dictated it for Jasmine to write.  My job then was to decipher and assist ;)

Daniel and Monster with cake.
Jasmine decided that she needed to make a dessert for Monster's birthday.  So she created 'scrooge scruge pie' which was a pie with apple, pear and marshmallows in it.  Actually, to our surprize, it turned out very nice without any trace of the pile of marshmallows heaped in!

Jasmine with her dessert ready to go into the oven.

Cupcake Day- officially 26 August but as we were away we participated on 2 September 2013
For the second year in a row the kids have fund raised for the SPCA by making, decorating and selling cupcakes.  They love the whole process - especially counting the money at the end ;)  Liam hosts our little sale and prepares everyone ahead of time to bring coins so that the process is fairly pain free.

Themselves with their icing and sugar laden cupcakes!
This year we raised $20.10 which we then took down to the local SPCA in Hokitika so they could add it to their stash.  We try to go down weekly to pat the cats, scruffle the dogs and take any willing participants for a walk.  Daniel has recently fallen in love with a cat there who he pats and plays with happily and as usual - despite its actual sex - it is a boy ;)

White-Baiting - 8 September 2013
Being on the Coast for over a year now it seemed only fitting and about time that some White-baiting was attempted.  The kids, and himself, were very excited to get down there so with a bit of advice from a few 'in the know' and a few 'not really in the know', off they went.  Himself and the kids went down by bike along the tow path while I took the car, equipment, food and drink down to the river mouth.

Themselves with their fishing nets trying their luck.

Most local White-baiters were leaving with comments of 'not running today' but we were there, armed and prepared so White-baiting we will go.  After around 30 mins of Liam on the scoop net and the kids with their fishing nets we had success!!! Not running indeed!  Well maybe not all of them were running but the 2, yes 2, that we caught certainly were ;)  One almost got away as the kids wanted to hold it in their hands however Jasmine was determined to have White-bait fritters for lunch so scrambled and searched through the rocks till she retrieved it!

Our grand catch for lunch - stick not included ;)
And so Himself and Herself junior had one white-bait each adorning some potato fritters.

Trip to Hari Hari - 15 September 2013

Today, with the sun shining and the Spring warmth to bolster us, the kids and I decided to venture South a little ways to Hari Hari.  In passing, on other trips, I had noticed a few little walks and a display about Guy Menzie crash landing there after his solo trans Tasman flight yet we had never stopped to explore properly.

With bikes, food, kids and dog loaded up we set off.  The kids loved the long stretches of undisturbed footpath to bike on in Hari Hari and soon spotted a park to play in.  From a distance a woman was there seemingly fixing bits in the playground however once we arrived we discovered that it was a local artist who was creating an amazing mosaic feature.  She discussed her plans for covering it and creating a place which can be used all year round and for weddings as the kids raced around the labyrinth of tiles and mosaic.

Themselves following the path to the sundial and back.

As we talked and praised her 8 year, and on-going, journey of creating a unique public space she asked if we would like to add to it by painting a tile too.  Like to?  Like to?  YES PLEASE!!! The kids each worked away on their tiles in the sunshine and we talked about how they would be able to come back in the future and visit their tile (the lady had told us where they would be).

Herself's Pukeko and Himself's Monster
Jasmine must of been giving it lots of thought afterwards as at teatime she announced that one day she was going to go back and get married in Hari Hari and see her tile ............ and you know what I don't doubt that she would ;)

Hope this finds you all revelling in your own bit of sunshine and warmth wherever you are.

Shame on me!!!

I was a little shocked to see that yet another month has gone by without me writing on here so I quickly set to work to download photos from the camera, ready to begin a post.  Let me tell you that I was even more shocked to find that I have hardly taken any photos either!!! Shame on me.

Honestly we have been busy and active. Yet somewhere in the midst of enjoying the moments and each other I have forgotten to record them digitally.  I never was one for taking photos. Liam is much better at remembering, as our record of past travels show.  Since home educating though I have become a little more diligent about getting the camera out - until now it seems.  Must be the holiday mode still lingering ;)

Our biggest moment over the past month was Daniel taking an interest in riding his pedal bike, as opposed to his running bike.  He was a little fearful though that he would fall so I promised most lovingly to hold on and not let go.  Up and down the footpath we went with me holding on and around the block we went with me in a running squat to minimise the aching back.  Daniel was very excited that he was riding and less than understanding that I may need a 'break'!!

A little helping hand
Right time for the troops to be called in.  Himself was requested to come down the park for his turn at support.  We all got ready and headed off.  Jasmine in lead with Daniel and himself in tow.  As we walked along I could hear himself give a few encouraging words and then....... 'Right Daniel when we get to the park I'm going to give you a really big push and you keep going'.   WHAT!!!!!!!  That wasn't the plan - let him go???!!!  What about my promise to hold on and guide?  What about himself's turn to have a sore back?

'On the grass though ay?' I asked himself.  'No', he replied as if I was a little soft in the head, 'it'll be too hard on the grass.'  Oh I thought ..... hold it in......... don't comment yet.  Into the park we go and I wait with bated breath hoping that my boy will not be making his 6th trip to A & E before he is 5!  'Are you ready Daniel?' himself asks '1,2,3..... go!' I run along side waiting hoping and ................ low and behold Daniel is pedalling and riding by independently - Yay!!!!

Daniel up and going
I would have been holding onto that bike seat till he was 10 if needed (probably even older if he asked nicely enough) so thank you to himself for scaring the wits out of me and getting Daniel up and going ;) Since then there is no stopping the boy and I'm having to run beside just to keep up with the pair of them!  The favourite is a grassy hill a few blocks from here which they both love speeding down and clambering back up.  His love of riding his 'racing bike' is so great that he even wanted to take it to the shops yesterday - which is literally across the road!

Themselves racing down the hill.

Hope this finds you all pedalling along happily.

The warm winter sun across the Tasman

Well we are now back in our wee house on hill after 10 days in a rather balmy Gold Coast, even in the rain, and all I can say is ....... BRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!  I read today about a woman who holidays in Winter only in places that are colder than her home location so that when she returns home always feels Spring like in comparison.  Reading that 2 weeks ago I would have thought 'Nutter!!!' Now though I can completely see her logic.
Making a snowman on the way over to Christchurch on the day we left.

Having a swim at Burleigh Heads.
The contrast in Winter temperatures is amazing - their overnight lows are our daytime highs. Having warm Winter days was a great tonic and herself in particular loved being in skirts/dresses and sandals.  You could tell the visitors to the Gold Coast by their 'Summery' attire and the Queenslanders by their jackets, scarves and long trousers ;)  Despite 3 of us getting sick in the second week we still enjoyed the time together as a family and having a break from lighting fires and wrapping up constantly.  It was lovely to catch up with friends and family which we haven't seen for a while too.

Some of our regular visitors which invited themselves to lunch and stole a piece of chicken off the plate!

Home will always be home though and as nice as a visit is we are all glad to be back in Aotearoa where I don't have to worry about kids investigating hidden spots for fear of snakes or being in the bush for fear of ticks!!!

Hope this finds you in the perfect climate for you.

Mid winter Christmas and New Year

Wow - didn't realise how long it had been since I last updated!!!  Hei aha.  I'm here now and will try to be a bit more diligent over recording our happenings and keeping you all in the know.  We are all good, snuggled up by the fire with the rain coming down more days than it isn't although some of us have a few less teeth than last time (herself junior) and some of us have more injuries and bandages (himself junior).  Anyway on with the show ..........

Just in time for Matariki (Maori New Year) the kids have decided that it is time to celebrate Christmas as well.  I mean what is New Year without Christmas!!  While having a pre-Matariki clear out and de-clutter Jasmine found a magazine she was given at Christmas, a magazine which I had actually forgotten she had as it was hidden away in her secret box. Well opening the pages and seeing snowy stories, recipes and glittery pictures was more than any child, let alone two, could stand and so begin the June Christmas mania.

Herself giving a face paint to Himself.  Pleased not all face painters work this way!!

We began with getting out the Christmas box of things to recover 2 books - one for Daniel on Thomas' snowy Christmas adventure and a Christmas Carol one for Jasmine, complete with CD.  Cue music and singing for days on end ;).  We had to listen to it multiple times, sing it at reading time and then look lovingly at the pictures in between times.  Next Jasmine found a recipe for meringue snowmen and since it was Monday, and we should be baking and we have lots of eggs, we created our fat little men for the children to decorate.  Jasmine was very pleased with hers and devoured it as quick as look at it.  Daniel was happy just to pick the crunchy stuff off but didn't want any of the squishy bits thanks.

The kid's meringue men.

Now you may ask what is Christmas without a tree and present?  Fear not Jasmine had that covered too.  She spent a busy morning selecting and collecting presents from around the house (since Mummy wasn't going to agree with her idea of going out to buy things for her to wrap), secretly wrapping and placing them under the tree.  We all got to open presents (sorry Liam you missed out while at work) and battle with cellotape before singing more songs and reading more Christmas tales of trains on snowy tracks.

The June Christmas tree

Matariki arrived on a clear starry morning and Jasmine was all ready at 5am to greet it.  Sadly though either the Alps or my lack of astronomical knowledge meant that we could not see it.  I assured her that it was in the sky for more than one morning, which eased her mind only a little, and so we agreed to look when at Nan's on the East Coast. Fingers crossed I know where to find it and what to look for by then.  We did managed to do some Matariki based activities though during the week, the favourite of which was baking gingerbread Matariki stars to decorate.  Strange how baking always wins out in this house although Jasmine was ever so slightly miffed at the fact she was only allowed one gingerbread star at a time to eat instead of the 7 Matariki stars that there should be!!

See there is fruit to accompany all that baking.
Hope this finds you all dry, warm and happy

Fair?

Just had to post this on here!!  It is an old image I know but still just as relevant today - maybe even more so as NZ begins to follow models of education that have already failed so many in other countries.  Things like this remind me of some of the reasons we home educate.

We are all good.  The rain has set in for the evening and the mornings are beginning to get colder.  We have had a great time last weekend catching up with friends and family in Christchurch.  One highlight in particular was going to 'clip and climb'.  Herself has really taken a liking to rock climbing after trying out a friend's home wall and all inspired she has come home to begin re-creating her own climbing swing.  A few modifications needed after a wee miscalculation of length of rope and position of the ground and she had a nice swing for both kids to enjoy.

Our other news is that after much wibbling, wobbling, wriggling and jiggling Jasmine's tooth has finally decided to leave her mouth!!!  Tooth fairy was well organised and exchange of tooth for coins completed.

Herself, the gap and tooth
